is a delightful combination of an old-fashioned "look", both in text and illustration, and modern interpretation. Bright clear colours follow the train from a crowded station platform,
Here is the train all noisy and full,
and the station clock goes
Tick-tock, tickerty-tock...
and the man in the station office cries,
Hurry up! Hurry up! Anymore tickets....?
until off we go. The train is intricately drawn, brightly coloured, and with a decoratively enhanced carriage and steam engine. We follow the driver, the fireman, and the passengers, including a school class and chickens off to market, until we reach the sleepy guard. Meanwhile in the quiet empty station the clock ticks and the station parrot recites the whole journey.
Bright, apparently simple and direct, reminiscent of 1970's picture books - do you remember Where's The Green Parrot? - it is a bold, delightfully decorative, humorous and clean-cut, and very attractive "old-fashioned" picture book. A delight.
